All of Scotland’s Big Five are present here on the West Highland peninsulas: red deer, red squirrels, golden eagles, otters and seals. The area is also home to pine martens, badgers, feral goats and is a bird watchers paradise with white tailed sea eagles, many endangered wading birds, including oystercatchers and curlew on the shores and migratory visitors, including cuckoo calling in the spring and large numbers of geese flying overhead in spring and autumn. The waters around the peninsulas are home to cetaceans, including porpoise, dolphin and orca as well as minke whales and basking sharks.

Walks and Hikes
Laga Lodge sits at the foot of Ben Laga, the second highest peak, after Ben Hiant, here on the Ardnamurchan peninsula. For ambitious climbers, we are close enough to Fort William, home of Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak, for a day trip, but right here on the doorstep of Laga Lodge are many walks, rambles, strolls and hikes in woodlands and beaches, hills and moors. Island Hopping
As well as the islands right here in Loch Sunart, we are just 15 miles from Kilchoan and the ferry to the Isle of Mull. A 40-minute ferry trip to the iconic Tobermory made famous in the BBC children’s TV show Balamory with its rainbow shops and houses. Home to some great shops and cafes, it is a great day trip from Laga Lodge. Slightly further afield, the port of Mallaig has ferries to the Isle of Skye and the Small Isles of Rum, Muck, Eigg and Canna.

Food and Drink
The Ardnamurchan Distillery is just a couple of miles from Laga Lodge, offering distillery tours. Also on the West Highland peninsulas, you can find Nc’Nean distillery in Drimnin and Ardgour Ales brewery. Local gins include The Strontian Distillery, and their four locally inspired gins are available by the glass in many pubs and restaurants as well as by the bottle from local shops. There are many local cafes, restaurants and hotels serving fantastic food and drink from snacks and sandwiches to fine dining, making use of abundant local produce from crofts, stalking estates and seafood. Arts, Crafts and Culture
The peninsulas are home to many artists, crafters, writers and poets inspired by the landscape. Whether you are looking for souvenirs and gifts to remember your trip, or perhaps interested in attending a workshop to learn new skills for yourself, there are gift shops and art galleries across the area. The Ariundle Centre and Oakwood in Strontian, Resipole Studio, Cafe Tiroam Gifts and West Coast Crafts in Kilchoan are all must-visit destinations. Traditional Scottish music and a strong Gaelic culture are part of the heritage of the area, and live music, ceilidhs and jam sessions are often found in pubs and venues across the area, including village halls and community spaces.
